RailRoad Crossing

  1. Active Flashers: turn on your four-way flashers approximately 100-200 feet before the crossing.
  2. Move to the right:position your vehicle to the right side of the road as you approach the tracks
  3. Stop and open windows:come to a complete stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail.
  4. Turn off all noise-making devices and open your windows so you can clearly hear an approching train.
  5. Look and listen:look in both directions down the track to listen for any trains.
  6. Check for clearance before proceeding: make sure you can completely clear the tracks without stopping on them.
  7. Cross safely: Once the path is clear, put your vehicle in the appropriate gear and cross the tracks without stopping , changing geears, or changing lanes.
  8. Deactiveate flashers: Turn off your four-way flashers only after your vehile has completely crossed the tracks.

Emergency Stopping

  1. Triangle placement on two-lane,two-way road place one triangle 10 feet behind the truck, a second 100 feet behind and a third 100 feet in front of the truck centered in the lane.
  2. On a divided or one-way highway, place all three triangles to the rear; one 10 feet behind, oe 100 feet behind and one 100 feet behind the truck,
    For hills and curves, incresase the distance to ensure visibility, with the furthers triangle up to 500 feet away. Always exit and place traingles fron the side closest to the shoulder,with the reflectie side facing oncoming traffic, and ensure the traingles are weighted to prevent tipping
